Section 10

The UIUC Occupational Health and Safety Program for Personnel Involved in Animal Care and Use

Federal regulations mandate that the animal care and use program include an occupational health and safety program that includes:

* Hazard identification and risk assessment

* Personnel training

* A program of personal hygiene

* Facilities, procedures and monitoring which support occupational health and safety

* Safeguards for animal experimentation involving hazards such as carcinogens, biohazardous agents, and anesthetic gases.

* Medical evaluation and preventive medicine for personnel

All persons with direct or indirect exposure to research and teaching animals must enroll in the OHS Program by completing an online Risk Assessment form. Each participant is responsible for completing and revising the risk assessment form to include all exposures. A protocol will not be approved by the IACUC office until all project personnel has enrolled in the program. Further evaluation of personal health risk is achieved by competition of the Health Screening Questionnaire. The Animal Care and Use Program Registered Nurse at McKinley Health Center confidentially reviews all submitted Health Screening Questionnaires. To enroll in the OHS program, please go to www.reseach.uiuc.edu/OHS.
