Section 14

Animal Health Maintenance, Surveillance and Quarantine

Animals that are suspected of carrying pathogenic organisms will be evaluated by an AACUP or DAR Veterinarian.

Rodent colonies in University laboratory animal facilities are routinely evaluated via the rodent health surveillance program administered by DAR. Similarly, herd health programs for all livestock species are administered by the AACUP. When incoming animals or those in established herds or colonies are determined to be carrying disease that could endanger other animals or research programs, the veterinarians may recommend that they be placed under quarantine or euthanized.

Investigators should consult with DAR prior to arranging to acquire animals from a non-approved vendor or non-commercial source such as another university or research institution. AACUP veterinarians work with professionals from source herds to import livestock. Agricultural animals are held in quarantine according to approved herd health programs. The DAR maintains quarantine space for rodents suspected of carrying disease. Determination of whether laboratory animals must be quarantined in the DAR Rodent Quarantine Facility or another specific area of an animal care facility or whether they should not be shipped to the University at all will be made by a DAR veterinarian. If adequate facilities are not available to contain disease and protect existing animal colonies from a given set of laboratory animals, the IACUC may withhold approval or require modification of that portion of a protocol which requests their use.
